While continuing my adventure into points of view, I discovered a Superpower. A Writer’s Superpower.

The excerpt refers to a particular point of view. Limited Omniscient.

There are two types of third-person point of view: omniscient, in which the narrator knows all of the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in the story, or limited, in which the narrator relates only their own thoughts, feelings, and knowledge about various situations and the other characters.

But I promised you a Superpower.. I found this quote inside Janet Burroway’s book Writing Fiction. It is too good for me to keep to myself.

“Although this common form of the limited omniscient may seem very restricted, given all the possibilities of omniscience, it has a freedom that no human being has. In life you have full access to only one mind, your own; and you are also the one person that you cannot externally observe. As a fiction writer you can do what no human being can do, be simultaneously inside and outside a given character.”
